What Is It?
Canvas, also known as Enterprise Learning Management System (ELMS-Canvas), is an online digital environment for students, faculty, and staff to connect beyond the classroom, share content, submit information, view videos, and so much more.
How Does It Work?
Students can access Canvas by visiting elms.umd.edu
. Once there, you will login using your directory id and password. Once logged in, you will automatically be directed to your Dashboard. From here you can access a number of different pages and tools housed within the Canvas site. On the left-hand side of the screen, you will notice a menu with various options.
Under the Courses tab, you will find all the courses you are currently enrolled in, including the New Student Orientation course “Success at UMD.” Select the course you want to explore and Canvas will redirect you to that course's page.
How Will You Use Canvas at Orientation?
All Fall 2020 incoming students will be required to complete a set of modules and quizzes on Canvas in preparation for their virtual academic advising appointment where they will register for classes. The modules on Canvas will provide students with information that will prepare them to pick their Fall courses and assist in deepening their knowledge of University of Maryland in preparation for their transition in Fall.
First-Year students will be enrolled in their Canvas course in mid-May and will be able to login and complete their modules and quizzes at that time.
Freshmen Connection students will be enrolled in their Canvas course in mid-May and will be able to login and complete their modules and quizzes at that time.
Transfer students will be enrolled in their Canvas course in late-April will be able to login and complete their modules and quizzes at that time
