Robert H. Smith School of Business (BMGT)

The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland brings together exceptional students, scholar-teachers and practitioners to create knowledge, promote an inclusive learning environment that fosters intellectual discovery, and equip current and future leaders with the tools necessary to assess complex problems and deliver innovative solutions.


The Smith Business School is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). All newly admitted freshmen in the Smith Business School must complete the following courses listed below by 45 University of Maryland credits and with a minimum grade of C-. AP/IB/transfer credits are not calculated into the 45 credit total, but completion of a course through those means will be accepted for the review.

  • Completion of BMGT220 (Principles of Accounting I)
  • Completion of BMGT230 or BMGT231 (Business Statistics)(or approved substitute course, see below for options)**
  • Completion of MATH120, 136 or 140 (Applied Calculus I or Calculus I) with a minimum grade of C- or above

** The following courses are approved substitutes for BMGT230:BIOM301, CCJS200, ECON230, ECON321, EDMS451, EPIB300, EPIB315, GEOG306, HLTH300, INST314, PSYC200, and SOCY201.

The following courses are approved substitutes for BMGT231: BIOE372, ENCE302, ENEE324, ENME392, STAT400, or STAT420.

Students outside of the Smith Business School
The Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC) is a student organization composed of 11 undergraduate students who continually meet with Smith faculty, advisory boards, students, and leaders to elicit ideas and facilitate the implementation of meaningful, productive changes.

Are there any unique programs or interdisciplinary options available?

  • Encourage students to use academic resources (advising, tutoring, etc.).
  • Provide emotional support and understanding during challenging academic times.
  • Promote independence and self-advocacy.
  • Students are assigned a professional academic advisor at Smith one week prior to their orientation program. This could be the advisor they work with for the entirety of their undergraduate education at Smith.
  • First year students at Smith must meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for their 2nd and 3rd semester classes, while transfer students must meet with an academic advisor prior to registering for their 2nd semester classes.
