A. James Clark School of Engineering (ENGR)
The University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering welcomes innovators who seek collaborative, hands-on learning, and offers them the resources to become the engaged problem-solvers that can remake society for the better.
Academic Programs
The Clark School for Engineering is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). All newly admitted freshmen in the Clark School must complete the following courses listed below by 45 University of Maryland credits and with a minimum grade of C-. AP/IB/transfer credits are not calculated into the 45 credit total, but completion of a course through those means will be accepted for the review.
- Chemistry Options
- CHEM135 (Chemistry for Engineers) OR
- CHEM271 OR
- A combination of CHEM131 (Gen. Chem I) and CHEM134 (Chemical Prin. for Engr) *
- ENES100 (Intro to Engineering Design)
- MATH141 (Calculus II)
- PHYS161 (Physics I)
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0
Students can only repeat one course, one time. A "W" (Withdrawal) counts as an attempt; therefore, the next attempt at that course is considered a repeat.

This 45-credit review standard applies to students admitted directly from high school, not transfer students. At the time of the review, students will also need to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
What if my student was not directly admitted to an LEP?
There are a set of gateway requirements for students to join the program.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in all courses taken at UMD and other institutions
- Completion of MATH141 (B- or better)
- Completion of PHYS161 (B- or better)
- Completion of either CHEM135 or CHEM271 or CHEM134/CHEM131 (C- or better)
Once the gateways are fulfilled, students may submit an LEP application.
